Lost and Found
If you have lost or found an animal this page will give you info to help you reunite the animal with its owner. Including a photo of the animal will greatly increase your chances. Please remember if you have found an animal and the owners are unknown it is considered Found. If you are missing an animal it is considered Lost..
Many people make the mistake of reversing the two, please read both the Lost and Found columns. Please consider some "leeway" in people's descriptions depending on their knowledge of animals. Many people will advertise finding a female cat only to find out it is a neutered male. I remember seeing an ad for a found Irish Setter on Dersch Rd. It was posted on a board right next to a lost Golden Retriever on Dersch Rd.They were the same dog. A little thing like this can be the difference between getting your beloved friend back or not.
First thing, put up flyer's. The more information you give the better. Please include the date lost or found, location, sex, color, approximate breed, whether it was wearing a collar etc. Put up flyer's in the area the animal was lost or found. Also put up flyer's at local businesses, feed stores, vet offices and our R.A.I.N Thrift Store, at our new location The Black Butte Plaza next to The Cinnamon Bear Bakery.
Putting an ad in a newspaper that comes out everyday like the Record Searchlight could help in locating your lost friend. You should run an ad for at least a couple of weeks if not more.
If you have found a lost dog or cat it is important to check to see if it is microchipped. You can do this at Millville Vet for no charge, and at the same time get an accurate description of the animal, including breed, age, sex and whether it has been altered. There is always a chance one of the techs will recognize it. Their phone number is 530-547-4457. While you are there make sure you post a FOUND notice. It is common for a microchipped animal not to have either a collar or tag on.
We recommend you should do both. A county license is NOT sufficient. If a person finds your animal after hours, weekends or holidays there is no way to find out who is the owner till the next business day. This can be up to four days. The easier you make it for the person who finds your animal the better chance you will get it back safely. Quickly equals safety, the longer your animal is missing the more danger it has of being hit by a car or harmed or killed by a person or predator! Most cats are not microchipped,or tagged. It is essential you put fliers up in the area where they were lost or found. Many cat owners don't look for their missing cat. They assume it was killed by a predator. Another important thing to do is to call Shasta County Animal Control and Haven Humane. Haven Humane does NOT take animals from Shingletown. All animals are referred to the pound, but sometimes people lie about where the animal was found. You can also call Tehama County Animal Control.Tehama county starts just before Manton. It would be very easy for your animal to end up there. I have heard of disgruntled neighbors taking their neighbors animal to Animal Control in another county to keep them from being found. If your animal does end up at Animal Control, depending on the time of year it has very little time before it will be destroyed. During the spring and summer months the facility is full of puppies and kittens. It is overloaded and time is especially of the essence! Go to Animal Control and look for your animal, do not trust other peoples descriptions, your friend is counting on you. Keep calling, keep looking. The phone numbers you will need are, Haven Humane
530-241-1653, Shasta County Animal Control 530-245-6065, Tehama County Animal Control 530-527-3439.
If you are considering taking a dog or cat to a county animal shelter I would strongly advise you not to! You don't know the vaccination history of this animal. Taking it to the pound will subject it to many dangerous and contagious viruses. For cats there is feline panleukopenia and feline distemper, both are very dangerous and deadly. There are also many strains of upper respiratory that are air born. When an animal starts to show signs of symptoms they are often euthanized instead of being treated. For dogs there is canine parvovirus and canine distemper, which are very deadly. Also kennel cough is very prevalent. The only way to safely take a cat or a dog to animal control is to first vaccinate it, give it enough time to be protected, put your name down to adopt the animal if it is not claimed or adopted and is scheduled to be destroyed. The ugly truth is most animals don't get out alive.
